The Mission

The mission of the Never Forget Foundation is to give returning wounded warriors, and injured or ill first responders, a variety of supportive programs to help these courageous men and women begin the healing process, knowing they are not forgotten.  The foundation recognizes the deep bond between firefighters and wounded warriors, and believes their interaction is beneficial for all.  Co-founded by a NYC firefighter and a registered nurse, the Never Forget Foundation is dedicated to providing wounded warriors and their families with much deserved "Rest and Relaxation" and assistance in connection with other resources.

The foundation's primary initiative is to provide wounded warriors, and their families, exclusive "R&R" trips to New York City.  For wounded warriors who cannot travel, we will bring "R&R" to them. Eventually, the program will expand nationwide and worldwide.

The foundation's expanded mission is to provide continuing services and financial assistance, through ongoing programs that bring together New York City's Bravest and soldiers for mutual comfort and support, so they may obtain medical and therapeutic assistance wherever available.  The foundation has established a Volunteer Service Board, to provide a range of services to those in need.  A wounded warrior needing a wheelchair ramp, for example, can contact us. The foundation has built an extensive network of firehouses across the country, and people who are ready, willing, and able to help.

Soldiers are coming home wounded in both body and spirit.  The most difficult time for many often comes after the reporters leave, the therapy is done, and they are home.  For the wounded in spirit, the foundation can help foster strength, resiliency, and hope through educational programs. The foundation has access to experts in stress management, post traumatic stress disorder, family issues, and more, offering programs created for the special needs of first responders, the military, and their families.

In the future, the foundation hopes to establish a summer camp for wounded warriors, firefighters, and their families, offering a place to relax and heal.  In addition to fishing, boating, and swimming, the camp would provide activities and classes, such as arts and crafts, and computer skills training.

The Beginning

The idea for the foundation came after visiting and talking to wounded warriors and their families at Walter Reed Hospital.  It became clear that they needed to “get away for awhile.”  Medical personnel agreed it would be very beneficial for soldiers and their families to spend time together outside of military surroundings. It would help them begin the process of reintegrating back to “civilian life” and bring a little joy, happiness, and fun during a very rough time.

In 2006, ten wounded warriors and their families were brought to New York City's special holiday festivities, to experience what only this city can offer.  It was great therapy, because they not only experienced the love and support of the FDNY, but also New Yorkers who opened their hearts to them.  The smiles on their faces said it all as they were escorted by NYC firefighters to the Top of the Rock, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the Bronx Zoo.  They sailed around Manhattan on a spectacular sunset Circle Line cruise, had a personnel tour of Yankee Stadium, and made a powerful and moving visit to Ground Zero, and to the quarters of Engine 10 and Ladder 10.  Of all of their memorable experiences, the time spent visiting the firehouse seemed to be the most meaningful.  There is a special bond of friendship and understanding between these soldiers and firefighters, created by the events of September 11, 2001.  The sharing of meals and stories in the firehouse creates a camaraderie that is more than simply “R&R.”  It is part of the healing process.

We Need Your Help

Visits are made possible primarily by the personal contributions of NYC firefighters and private donations.  Continued support will enable us to carry on this mission, bringing much needed and well deserved “R&R”, as well as other important programs, to wounded warriors, injured or ill first responders, and their families.
